Lice come in the form of head lice, body lice, and pubic lice. They are parasitic insects that can be found on a person’s head, body, or pubic area. Head lice are most commonly found among children attending any childcare setting, elementary school children, and individuals who live in the same home as someone who has lice. They are spread by having direct contact with someone who has head lice or by having contact with the clothing (hats) and personal items (brushes) of a person with lice. The feeling of something moving in the hair, itching, or sores on the head are all signs and symptoms of a head lice infestation. There are medicines/treatments available that kill lice, and their eggs both over-the-counter and with a prescription. Since head lice and their eggs are killed by being exposed to temperatures over 128 degrees Fahrenheit, machine washing and drying articles used by the infested person such as hats, pillowcases, bedding, clothing, and towels with hot water and hot air is recommended for items that have been used in the 2-day period before the start of treatment.
