Tri-Cities School Listening Session
This event is open to families, students, school staff and community members. Snacks, $25 gift cards, and opportunities for high school students to earn community service hours will be available!

We support the Washington State Department of Health as they are eager to hear from students interested in environmental science, political science, and law to help shape the standards that will impact more than one million K-12 students across Washington State.

In 2022, The Benton-Franklin Health District announced the creation of the first School Environmental Health & Safety Program in Benton and Franklin counties. The objective of this program is to promote school safety and support all public, private, and parochial K-12 schools by:

  • Overseeing plan reviews for new and existing school construction projects.
  • Implementing periodic school health & safety inspections.
  • Offering consultations to school administration on risk reduction.
  • Providing educational resources on school environmental health & safety.

School Resources
A student’s health, well-being, and academic success are shown to improve in safe and healthy learning environments. The Benton-Franklin Health District is committed to creating and preserving a safe learning environment for all K-12 students and staff, and we encourage schools to use the resources below to evaluate and improve indoor air quality, cleaning practices, laboratory safety and more.

Playground Safety Toolkit
This Playground Safety Toolkit serves as a resource for getting started on your school’s playground inspection and maintenance program. You can use the inspection forms as they are or use them as a guide to create one specific to your school’s needs. In addition, there are several resource documents to help in understanding the many components of playground safety and identifying potential hazards. Each heading below outlines a different form or resource that can be used for evaluating your school’s playgrounds for safety hazards. A summary of the purpose of each document has also been provided under each heading.
