World Alzheimer’s Day 2024
Posted on 09/20/2024

On World Alzheimer’s Day, the Benton-Franklin Health District Healthy Aging Team would like to promote awareness of symptoms, treatment, and support for our community. We acknowledge the ongoing challenges experienced both by people living with a form of dementia and those who are providing care. We recognize that more than 55 million people worldwide are affected by Alzheimer’s Disease and other dementias.

Knowing early signs of Alzheimer’s Disease and seeking help from a medical provider can make a difference. Discussing your observations can lead to early detection of Alzheimer’s or a different form of dementia. Symptoms could also point to another health concern needing treatment. The Alzheimer’s Association describes 10 early symptoms and also provides examples of typical age-related changes. 10 Early Signs and Symptoms of Alzheimer’s & Dementia | alz.org

Research for treatments and a cure are currently ongoing and encouraging advances have been made. Some medications are prescribed to treat symptoms and others are used to change disease progression. With recent advances in medications to slow Alzheimer’s in the early stages, pursuing medical advice when symptoms first appear is a high priority to develop the best care plan for each individual.

Our local Alzheimer’s Association offers education, a Tri-Cities Support Group, and other resources. Peacock Coffee Roasting Co. hosts a Memory Café on the 4th Sunday of each month 1pm-3pm where families and friends can socialize in an accepting and non-judgmental environment. Most recently Game Time Fridays have been established on the 2nd Friday of every month at the Richland Public Library 10am-12pm. To reach the local Alzheimer’s Association office call or text 509.321.4579. A free 24/7 National help line is also available 800.272.3900.

Walk to End Alzheimer’s Tri-Cities takes place annually. This year’s walk will take place on October 19, 2024 at John Dam Plaza in Richland. If you’d like to join the world’s largest fundraiser to fight the disease, register at act.alz.org/Tri-Cities to participate.
