The Benton-Franklin Health District promotes health, prevents illness and protects safety at over 190 regulated water recreation facilities at hotels, athletic clubs, apartment complexes and cities throughout Benton and Franklin Counties.

The Water Recreation Program Staff work to reduce the risk of unintentional drowning and to prevent illness for people who swim, soak, or play in public pool, spas, hot tubs or natural bodies of water through the following activities:

  • Conducting routine inspections of public swimming pools, spas and hot tubs. During inspections, staff:
    • Test the level of chemicals in the pool to make certain that the pool water contains enough chlorine to protect from the growth of harmful bacteria.
    • Make certain that fences and gates are working properly to prevent small children from entering the pool area without a parent or guardian.
    • Check to make certain pool operators have needed safety equipment to respond to emergencies.
    • Review the records kept by pool operators to insure they testing the water frequently to maintain safety.
  • Investigate drowning and near drowning incidents.
  • Investigate possible illnesses.
  • Investigate complaints.
  • Provide community education opportunities to pool operators on facility operation and water recreation safety.
  • Assist builders and designers of pools through the approval process with the State Department of Health.
